B2B Digital Marketing for Technical Industries: An Experiment in Leveraging ChatGPT for Content Generation

B2B Digital Marketing for Technical Industries: An Experiment in Leveraging ChatGPT for Content Generation

I’m sure you’ve heard the buzz about ChatGPT and how it’s soon to take over the world. Is it true? Is ChatGPT on the verge of transforming content creation for technical industries?

In general, my perspective on new technologies is that it’s good to be aware of them as they emerge and to take a test-and-learn approach, rather than throwing out all existing processes and relying 100% on a new method.

Will ChatGPT replace human copywriters and subject matter experts when it comes to marketing in technical industries? I can’t predict the future, but for the near term it seems to be a good tool to embrace, as part of the process, in certain areas where it can be most helpful. It appears to be a long way from replacing us humans, but for now it can be a useful research assistant and brainstorming partner.

If you haven’t played around with the tool yet, this article will introduce you to how it works by showing a few examples of prompts and what those prompts generated. The parts of this article shown in unitalicized type were written by me, a human author (with editing and proofreading by a human editor), and the text shown in italics is what was generated by ChatPGT, unedited. Between the ChatGPT-generated sections, I’ll interject some comments and remarks within brackets, and then wrap up with a summary at the end of the article.

Please note that these examples were generated using ChatGPT version 3.5, the free version available at the time this article was written in early 2023, and not the paid version 4.0.

To get started on this public experiment, I opened up ChatGPT and gave it the prompt below, having already been tipped off by a colleague that stating “in the voice of” will help the tool to write more like your brand—or at least your brand’s voice as of 2021, since ChatGPT has limited knowledge of events that occurred after September 2021. (If we’ve organically evolved the voice of Windmill Strategy since then, it wouldn’t be reflected here.)

Prompt:

write 1500 words on using ChatGPT for generating industrial manufacturing website content in the voice of Windmillstrategy.com

As a digital marketing agency specializing in industrial manufacturing, we at Windmillstrategy.com understand the importance of quality content for establishing a strong online presence. In today’s digital age, having a website that effectively communicates your brand’s values, products, and services is crucial for attracting potential customers and maintaining a competitive edge.

[I’d argue that this doesn’t really sound like our voice at all, but it does sound very confident. I would have referred to ourselves as “Windmill Strategy” vs. Windmillstrategy.com but that’s an easy edit.]

One of the ways we’ve helped our clients in the industrial manufacturing sector create engaging website content is by utilizing ChatGPT, a powerful natural language processing tool developed by OpenAI. In this article, we’ll explore how ChatGPT works and how we’ve leveraged its capabilities to generate compelling content for our clients.

[Honestly, the two paragraphs above, taken together, make me cringe a little bit. Instead of making a sales pitch or pushing a “look how great we are” tone, I typically like to write articles to be informative and helpful, a style that tends to perform much better in terms of engagement and to be more interesting to other humans. But perhaps that’s something that could be massaged with more skill at using the tool?]

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3, is a cutting-edge artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. Essentially, it’s a computer program that’s been trained on an immense corpus of text data, including books, articles, and websites, allowing it to generate human-like text in response to user input.

Unlike traditional chatbots or automated content generators, ChatGPT can produce responses that are natural, coherent, and contextually relevant, making it an ideal tool for creating website content that resonates with your target audience.

[My impression thus far is that ChatGPT is good for finding, compiling and reciting encyclopedic facts, and these purely informational paragraphs, above and below, came out fairly well.]

How does ChatGPT work?

At its core, ChatGPT is built on a deep learning neural network that’s been pre-trained on a vast amount of text data. This pre-training phase allows the model to learn patterns and relationships within the language, which it can then use to generate new text that’s consistent with the input it receives.

When generating content, ChatGPT works by taking a user’s prompt or question and using that as a starting point to generate a response. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to generate a product description for a new industrial machine, it might respond with something like:

“Our new industrial machine is designed to streamline your production process and increase efficiency. With advanced automation features and intuitive controls, you can reduce downtime and improve overall performance. Plus, our machine is built to last, with durable components and easy maintenance.”

[This isn’t bad for an overview or intro, but it’s very general. Just about everyone will be touting advanced features, intuitive controls, reduced downtime, better performance, durable components, etc. In the future, I would like to do an experiment with more actual specs and features, to see how the tool does there.]

Of course, the output generated by ChatGPT will vary depending on the prompt and the specific parameters set by the user. However, in general, the results are remarkably human-like, with a natural flow and tone that’s difficult to distinguish from something a human writer might produce.

How can ChatGPT be used for industrial manufacturing website content?

So how exactly can ChatGPT be leveraged to create website content for the industrial manufacturing sector? There are a variety of ways, depending on your specific needs and goals. Here are a few examples:

1. Product descriptions:

ChatGPT can be used to generate compelling product descriptions for your industrial machines, tools, and other equipment. By inputting key details like product features, specifications, and benefits, you can generate detailed and informative descriptions that help potential customers understand the value of your products.

[As noted elsewhere, I’d like to see how the tool performs with dense and technical information vs. overview generalities.]

2. FAQs:

Many industrial manufacturing companies have a wide range of products and services, and potential customers often have a lot of questions about what they offer. ChatGPT can be used to generate answers to frequently asked questions, providing valuable information to website visitors and helping to establish your brand as a trusted authority in your industry.

[ChatGPT gets its information from books, webtexts, Wikipedia, articles and other pieces of writing on the internet. If your customers are asking about general reference information, I’d expect this to be fine, but how will it get detailed information about your specific products and services, if that information isn’t already out there online?]

3. Blog posts:

Maintaining an active blog is a great way to attract potential customers and establish thought leadership in your industry. ChatGPT can be used to generate blog post ideas, outlines, and even full drafts, allowing you to quickly and easily publish new content on a regular basis.

[I do think ChatGPT is useful for helping to generate title ideas, outlines, and the like. Many people argue that it’s a good first draft partner, but my opinion is that it depends on the topic and whether the information is already widely found online or you’re aiming for more of an opinion piece communicating your point of view.]

4. Landing pages:

Landing pages are a crucial part of any website, as they’re often the first thing potential customers see when they visit your site. ChatGPT can be used to generate copy for landing pages that’s informative, engaging, and compelling, helping to increase conversions and drive sales.

[It had better be more than broad platitudes and generalizations to be a high-performing landing page, in my humble opinion, so I would expect plenty of editing, but it could be worth experimenting with this scenario.]

Benefits

[Whoops! At this point the tool stopped, presumably because we’d reached 1500 words — I had expected that it would edit what it had to say to fit the specified word count. Out of curiosity, I wondered whether a slightly different prompt would generate exactly the same content or provide a variation. Let’s see:]

Original Prompt:

write 1500 words on using ChatGPT for generating industrial manufacturing website content in the voice of Windmillstrategy.com

Revised Prompt:

write 1500 words on the benefits of using ChatGPT for generating industrial manufacturing website content, in the voice of Windmillstrategy.com

As a digital marketing agency specializing in industrial manufacturing, we’ve seen firsthand the benefits of using ChatGPT to generate website content for our clients. From improved efficiency to increased engagement and conversions, there are a variety of advantages to leveraging this cutting-edge technology in your content marketing strategy.

[This is a better start; providing the tool with a very simple “angle” of focusing on the benefits helped minimize the generalities and platitudes.]

In this article, we’ll explore some of the key benefits of using ChatGPT for industrial manufacturing website content, and how it can help you achieve your marketing goals.

1. Improved efficiency and productivity

One of the biggest benefits of using ChatGPT for generating website content is improved efficiency and productivity. With traditional content creation methods, it can take a significant amount of time and effort to research, draft, and edit high-quality content. This can be especially challenging for industrial manufacturing companies, which often have complex products and services that require detailed explanations.

However, with ChatGPT, you can generate high-quality content quickly and easily, without the need for extensive research or writing. Simply input the necessary details, and the model will generate natural and coherent content in a matter of seconds. This can save you a significant amount of time and effort, allowing you to focus on other important aspects of your marketing strategy.

[Please have an engineer or subject matter expert review any product data before declaring it “high-quality.” ChatGPT writes well in terms of grammar and punctuation, and it can do OK with tone, but engineers don’t want to spend time reading anything that feels like marketing fluff.]

2. Consistency and accuracy

Another benefit of using ChatGPT for industrial manufacturing website content is consistency and accuracy. Because the model has been trained on a vast corpus of text data, it’s able to generate responses that are contextually relevant and free of errors. This can be especially valuable for industrial manufacturing companies, which often deal with complex terminology and technical details that require precise explanations.

With ChatGPT, you can ensure that your website content is consistently accurate and informative, helping to establish your brand as a trusted authority in your industry.

3. Increased engagement and conversions

Of course, one of the ultimate goals of website content is to drive engagement and conversions. By providing valuable information to your website visitors, you can establish trust and credibility, and ultimately convince them to take action, whether that’s making a purchase, filling out a contact form, or signing up for a newsletter.

With ChatGPT, you can generate website content that’s informative, engaging, and compelling, helping to increase engagement and drive conversions. By providing clear and concise information about your products and services, you can help potential customers understand the value of what you offer and why they should choose your brand over your competitors.

[ChatGPT would likely be very good for creating short summaries for product family pages, after those product pages and their content have been created. But true engagement and trust won’t happen when content feels robotic or flat. Engineers and other technical audiences will trust vendor websites where the copy demonstrates that the company truly understands their point of view and needs, and provides access to as much concrete factual information and specification data as possible.]

4. Scalability

Another benefit of using ChatGPT for industrial manufacturing website content is scalability. As your business grows and your content needs evolve, it can be challenging to keep up with the demand for new and engaging content. With traditional content creation methods, this often requires hiring additional writers or outsourcing to third-party agencies, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

However, with ChatGPT, you can generate high-quality content on-demand, without the need for additional resources. This can be especially valuable for industrial manufacturing companies that have a wide range of products and services, as it allows you to easily create content for new products and services as they’re released.

[It’s true, ChatGPT generated each of these 1,500-word entries in about 10 seconds.]

5. Personalization

Finally, one of the benefits of using ChatGPT for industrial manufacturing website content is personalization. By leveraging user data and machine learning algorithms, ChatGPT can generate content that’s tailored to the specific needs and preferences of your target audience.

For example, you can input information about your target audience’s demographics, interests, and pain points, and ChatGPT can generate content that speaks directly to those needs. This can help to increase engagement and conversions, as your website visitors will feel like the content is speaking directly to them.

[This is an interesting idea, and it would be great if the tool could do this well. However, there is plenty of not-compelling content out in the world, especially in the industrial and technical space, so I would worry that ChatGPT would only create mediocre content, vs. content that would position your company at a higher level.]

In conclusion, there are a variety of benefits to using ChatGPT for industrial manufacturing website content. From improved efficiency and productivity to increased engagement and conversions, this cutting-edge technology can help you achieve your marketing goals and establish

[Well, that article was arguably better than the first, with just a little bit more specificity in the original prompt. Let’s build on that and see what we can do with a bit more information about the target audience:]

Prompt:

write 1500 words on using ChatGPT for marketers at mid-sized industrial companies who struggle with trying to keep up with a constantly changing digital marketing landscape, and being stretched in many directions, trying to do it all as a small marketing team, while selling a complex product or service to a niche industry, with a long sales cycle and multiple buyer personas, in the voice of windmillstrategy.com

At Windmill Strategy, we understand the challenges that mid-sized industrial companies face when it comes to digital marketing. With a constantly changing landscape, a small marketing team, and a complex product or service to sell, it can be difficult to keep up with the demands of digital marketing while also selling to a niche industry with a long sales cycle and multiple buyer personas.

That’s why we recommend leveraging cutting-edge technologies like ChatGPT to streamline your digital marketing efforts and maximize your resources. In this article, we’ll explore how ChatGPT can benefit marketers at mid-sized industrial companies and help you achieve your marketing goals.

[For some reason, this intro referred to us as “Windmill Strategy” vs. “Windmillstrategy.com,” despite using the same prompt. It did a nice job of pulling together my more crude laundry list of audience descriptors into a good introduction. I don’t love the “That’s why we recommend leveraging…” part but that would be an easy edit.]

1. Saves Time and Resources

As a mid-sized industrial company with a small marketing team, you likely have a lot of responsibilities and not enough time to do it all. Traditional content creation methods can be time-consuming and resource-intensive, requiring extensive research and writing to create high-quality content.

With ChatGPT, you can generate high-quality content quickly and easily, without the need for extensive research or writing. This can save you a significant amount of time and effort, allowing you to focus on other important aspects of your marketing strategy.

2. Ensures Consistency and Accuracy

Another benefit of using ChatGPT for mid-sized industrial companies is consistency and accuracy. With complex products and services that require detailed explanations, it can be challenging to ensure that all of your content is consistent and accurate.

By using ChatGPT, you can ensure that your website content, social media posts, and other digital assets are consistently accurate and informative. This can help to establish your brand as a trusted authority in your industry, and build trust with your target audience.

3. Tailors Content to Your Audience

One of the biggest challenges for mid-sized industrial companies is catering to multiple buyer personas with different pain points and interests. With ChatGPT, you can leverage user data and machine learning algorithms to generate content that’s tailored to the specific needs and preferences of your target audience.

By inputting information about your target audience’s demographics, interests, and pain points, ChatGPT can generate content that speaks directly to those needs. This can help to increase engagement and conversions, as your website visitors will feel like the content is speaking directly to them.

[At this point I’m feeling like we’ve heard these points before. Which, arguably, we have, since we’ve given similar prompts already and reviewed similar drafts. However, if we’re getting similar content here, would competitors using the same tool all end up with very similar content? Unfortunately, content marketing is already often practiced simply by producing more and more content regardless of its quality and point of view. If it all becomes virtually indistinguishable and generic, does that spell the end of content marketing, as audiences—especially technical audiences—disengage and look for other ways to find unique and authentic content?]

4. Scalable and Cost-Effective

Mid-sized industrial companies often struggle with scaling their marketing efforts as their business grows. With traditional content creation methods, this often requires hiring additional writers or outsourcing to third-party agencies, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

However, with ChatGPT, you can generate high-quality content on-demand, without the need for additional resources. This can be especially valuable for mid-sized industrial companies that have a wide range of products and services, as it allows you to easily create content for new products and services as they’re released.

[Again, I’d be careful with the blind assumption of “quality.” Several things that I’ve seen ChatGPT generate thus far have given me an initial impression of “wow, that’s not too bad actually,” but then after reading the entire article, I’m left with the impression that it didn’t really tell me much. I’ve heard this referred to as “horoscope content.”]

5. Improves SEO and Increases Website Traffic

Finally, one of the benefits of using ChatGPT for mid-sized industrial companies is improved SEO and increased website traffic. By generating high-quality, keyword-rich content, you can improve your website’s search engine rankings and attract more organic traffic to your site.

[There has been much debate as to whether AI-generated content would be seen in a negative light by search engines. As of this writing, Google has updated its stance, so that as long as the content clearly is made with people, i.e., human readers, in mind, and not created for the purpose of ranking well in search engines, everything is OK. Right now, a lot of content is created by humans and robots purely for the purpose of ranking in search engines, so this is a step in the right direction. However, as discussed above, the content generated by ChatGPT needs some finesse, editing, and good direction in order to be truly useful for those human readers.]

This can be especially valuable for mid-sized industrial companies that are trying to establish themselves as thought leaders in their industry. By consistently creating high-quality content that’s optimized for search engines, you can attract more qualified leads to your site and establish your brand as a trusted authority in your industry.

In conclusion, mid-sized industrial companies face a unique set of challenges when it comes to digital marketing. With a small marketing team, a complex product or service to sell, and a niche industry to cater to, it can be difficult to keep up with the demands of digital marketing.

However, by leveraging cutting-edge technologies like ChatGPT, you can streamline your digital marketing efforts and maximize your resources. With improved efficiency, consistency,

[Again, the generated text was cut off here. Perhaps I’ll have to stop setting a word limit. To experiment, I clicked “regenerate response” and got a new answer to the same existing prompt. The tool could be used a bit like a magic 8-ball; if you don’t like the first output, keep asking for it to regenerate until you get something that you like better.]

As a digital marketing agency specializing in industrial manufacturing, we understand the challenges that mid-sized companies face when it comes to keeping up with the constantly changing digital marketing landscape. With limited resources and a complex product or service to sell, it can be difficult to stay on top of the latest trends and tactics while also managing multiple buyer personas and a long sales cycle.

Fortunately, with the advent of cutting-edge technologies like ChatGPT, there are now powerful tools available that can help mid-sized industrial companies to streamline their digital marketing efforts and achieve their business goals. In this article, we’ll explore some of the key benefits of using ChatGPT for marketers at mid-sized industrial companies, and how it can help to address some of the common challenges they face.

[I do like these two intro paragraphs a bit better than the previous version. The numbered sections are very similar to the previous versions—variations on a theme as far as the text content goes.]

1. Efficiency and Productivity

One of the biggest challenges that mid-sized industrial companies face when it comes to digital marketing is managing their limited resources effectively. With a small marketing team, it can be difficult to keep up with the demands of creating high-quality content, managing social media channels, optimizing websites for SEO, and executing successful email campaigns, among other tasks.

However, by leveraging ChatGPT, marketers can now generate high-quality content quickly and easily, without the need for extensive research or writing. This can save a significant amount of time and effort, allowing marketing teams to focus on other important aspects of their marketing strategy. With ChatGPT, marketers can generate blog posts, social media updates, product descriptions, and other content in a matter of minutes, freeing up valuable time for other marketing activities.

2. Consistency and Accuracy

Another challenge that mid-sized industrial companies face when it comes to digital marketing is ensuring that their messaging is consistent and accurate across all channels. With a complex product or service to sell and multiple buyer personas to target, it can be difficult to ensure that all messaging is aligned and on-brand.

However, by leveraging ChatGPT, marketers can ensure that their messaging is consistent and accurate, regardless of the channel or audience. ChatGPT is able to generate responses that are contextually relevant and free of errors, ensuring that all messaging is aligned with the company’s brand and voice. This can help to establish the company as a trusted authority in the industry, and build trust and credibility with potential customers.

3. Increased Engagement and Conversions

Ultimately, the goal of digital marketing is to drive engagement and conversions. With a long sales cycle and multiple buyer personas, it can be challenging to create content that resonates with all audiences and convinces them to take action.

However, by leveraging ChatGPT, marketers can generate content that’s informative, engaging, and compelling, helping to increase engagement and drive conversions. By providing clear and concise information about the company’s products and services, marketers can help potential customers understand the value of what the company offers and why they should choose the company over its competitors.

4. Scalability

Another challenge that mid-sized industrial companies face when it comes to digital marketing is scalability. As the company grows and its marketing needs evolve, it can be challenging to keep up with the demand for new and engaging content. With traditional content creation methods, this often requires hiring additional writers or outsourcing to third-party agencies, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

target audience. This can help to increase engagement and drive conversions by providing potential customers with the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions.

For example, ChatGPT can be used to create personalized product descriptions based on a customer’s browsing and purchase history, or to generate custom email campaigns based on their interests and preferences. This can help to establish a more personal connection with potential customers, and make them feel valued and understood by the company.

Conclusion

Overall, there are many benefits to using ChatGPT for marketers at mid-sized industrial companies who struggle with keeping up with a constantly changing digital marketing landscape. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, marketers can streamline their marketing efforts, increase efficiency and productivity, ensure consistency and accuracy in messaging, drive engagement and conversions, and scale their content creation efforts as their company grows.

So, what’s the overall verdict on ChatGPT? There are a few spots where it can be a helpful content partner, like writing overviews, brainstorming, and reciting information already found on the internet. It will be less useful for generating really impactful and unique point-of-view content or writing about anything not widely “scrapable” from the web.  Before publishing ChatGPT content anywhere else on our website, beyond this “demo” of the tool, I would want to have the article heavily edited by a human, either myself or an editor who understands our brand and business model.
