- Reinforce its leaders’ credentials and expertise to help attract referrals from partners
- Attract career seekers
phData was founded by former Thomson Reuters and Cloudera software engineers to capitalize on the fast-growing demand for Big Data solutions and services. By focusing on its core strengths — Big Data platforms, applications, and machine learning for the enterprise — the Minneapolis-based company has been successfully competing against much larger technology consulting firms such as Accenture, IBM, Cap Gemini and others. So successful, in fact, phData experienced 100 percent year-over-year growth in 2018 on the strength of customers like Boston Scientific, Cargill and General Mills.
Appealing to an Educated, Smart Audience
Many website visitors are influential Cloudera representatives, who refer their clients to phData for Big Data and machine learning consulting, data ops software, and managed services capabilities. Cloudera is a leading enterprise data cloud company serving numerous industries. Other important phData partners include AWS, Azure and Arcadia Data.
phData’s target clients read like a page from Google’s employee directory: data scientist, VP of analytics, architect and software engineer. Most of its customers are deeply enmeshed in implementing data platforms and require managed services and consulting expertise from the engineers and data scientists at phData.
Evoking a Professional, Enterprise-Level Quality
Given the company’s smart, educated audience, the new website design needed to communicate an air of authority and knowledge in addition to being approachable and trustworthy. The website’s content is directed by a voice and style guideline that defines phData as pragmatic, agile, results-oriented, innovative and fearless.
To that end, we designed the site to evoke a professional, enterprise-level quality using abstract images and a blue and gray palette that complemented the company’s existing brand and logo color. phData’s previous website was built with WordPress, so it made sense to stay with the industry’s best open-source content management system (CMS). By sticking with WordPress, phData’s site administrators could also avoid expensive additional training.
The site’s pages use modular visual elements, which makes it easier for site admins to style pages on their own much faster, and without the need for unique design templates. No design experience required!
The easy-to-navigate website helps prospects quickly learn more about phData in a section named “What We Do.” Here, viewers dive deeply into the company’s core business offerings through scrolling pages embellished with striking graphics and data visualizations.

Harnessing an MVP Methodology, Iterative Design Approach
To meet phData’s requirements to create and launch the new website quickly, we embraced a minimum viable product (MVP) methodology to build it. Close collaboration between phData and Windmill Strategy kept everyone aligned and moving ahead during this project. Following the launch at the end of 2018, iterative enhancements were made to reflect changes in phData’s offerings. With the speed of phData’s growth, there will undoubtedly be more.
